A cyber-physical system (CPS) integrates computing and communication capabilities with the monitoring and control of entities in the physical world. Such control systems are normally distributed, real-time, and usually include embedded devices, sensors, and wireless links. Many system components are remotely deployed, have unique constraints, and may be physically inaccessible for maintenance, and/or physically accessible for attack. Often, CPSs are safety-critical, because their failure could endanger lives or cause large economic losses. CPSs have changed from being device/subsystem centric to information centric. For economic and productivity reasons, open networks are an attractive communication medium for CPSs, but doing this increases their vulnerability to intentional attacks. We need a way to handle the complexity of new CPSs and make them secure in a systematic and holistic way, and we need a way to reengineer software legacy systems to make them more secure by tracing back code changes so that their impact on security mechanisms can be detected and corrected. In this moment there exists no methodology to secure safe, and compliant CPSs. There are methods to make secure or safe specific units or specific functions but not a complete CPS. We propose here such a methodology.

Eduardo B. Fernandez (Eduardo Fernandez-Buglioni) is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, USA. He has published numerous papers on authorization models, object-oriented analysis and design, cloud computing, and security patterns. He has written four books on these subjects, the most recent being a book on security patterns; he is working now on a book on Cloud and IoT security patterns. He has lectured all over the world at both academic and industrial meetings. He has created and taught several graduate and undergraduate courses and industrial tutorials. His current interests include security patterns, cloud computing security, and cyber-physical systems security and safety, including IoT. He holds a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Member of ACM. He is an active consultant for industry, including assignments with IBM, Allied Signal, Panasonic, Motorola, Lucent, Huawei, and others. More information in: http://faculty.eng.fau.edu/fernande
